Charlie Vavra signed on as a physical education instructor at the University of Colorado with the intention of staying one year, but 10 years later he led an NCAA competitive team he created. Along with the Colorado varsity team, Vavra started the Pentagon Club, an intramural team designed for gymnasts who did not make the varsity squad. Originally intended for community shows, the Pentagon Club eventually entered AAU competitions and won four Rocky Mountain AAU Championships in five years. Vavra also served as a member of the NCAA Gymnastics Rules Committee.
