Charles Simms earned much of his success as a competitor on the horizontal bar, winning AAU and NCAA gold in the event, all while contributing to team efforts in two Olympics and one World Championships. Simms remained close to the sport following retirement as a judge of NCAA and AAU meets. His journalistic background helped him to also serve as an editor of the Modern Gymnast.
