L.R. Perry was a pioneer for the development of competitive gymnastics in Kansas. For 33 years, he taught competitive gymnastics at Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Kansas where his teams captured five straight state championships between 1960 and 1964. At the statewide level, Perry helped organize the Kansas State High School season competitions as well as the State Championships. For his efforts, a park is dedicated to him in Lawrence.
