Carl Patterson served the sport of gymnastics as a coach, judge and educational contributor. The majority of his career was spent coaching at his alma mater, Temple University, where his teams won the Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League team gold in 1964 and 1968. The National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches named Patterson Coach of the Year and voted him President of the Association, but he passed away before assuming the position. A judge at all levels, Patterson wrote on his expertise in coaching and judging. He was a member of the National Collegiate Gymnastics Rules Committee and the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Committee.
