Krempel was a gymnast since the age of five, an AAU competitor by 15 and a champion by 18. The two-time Olympian gathered eight AAU titles, specializing in the rings and floor exercise. Following retirement from competition in 1930, Krempel went on to judge the 1932 Olympic Games in his home town, Los Angeles, as well as various high school meets.
