Rene Kern, a Springfield College graduate, gained his reputation as a gymnastics coach at the Central Branch YMCA in Brooklyn where he specialized in exhibition gymnastics. Kern put together an exhibition team of 18 men and 16 women that toured the eastern United States. A bit of a renaissance man of his time, Kern’s addition of women to the exhibition team was a contributing factor to his reception of the 1971 C.G.A. Honor Coach Award.
